Learning to be mindful isn’t easy, in fact mindfulness is unnatural. As humans we want to be remembering the past or rushing towards the future. Bringing ourselves back to the present is something we have to work at, it isn’t instinctual. I have intentionally kept this 31 days series basic. Learning about the mind and our human habits can easily become overwhelming reading with a lot of unfamiliar words and terminology. Some people spend so much time reading about mindfulness, they don’t get around to practicing it.
The following are some Christian based books that I recommend for learning and reading about mindfulness and spiritual disciplines.
Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth (Richard J. Foster)
An Alter in the World: A Geography of Faith (Barbara Brown Taylor)
The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives (Dallas Willard)
Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life (Donald S. Whitney)
Sacred Pathways: Discover Your Soul’s Path to God (Gary L. Thomas)
Simplify: Ten Practices to Unclutter Your Soul (Bill Hybels)
Check out some of these books online or in a bookstore. If there is one that peaks your interest purchase it or borrow it from a library. One of these books might be a great start to your mindfulness practice or help you with traditional spiritual disciplines.
